MBA student named Gates Millennium Scholar

NEW HAVEN >> Of 1,000 high school seniors across the nation accepted into the Gates Millennium Scholars program, two are from the Elm City. James Hillhouse High School senior Dazjia Green and Metropolitan Business Academy senior Kiet Ho are among the four Connecticut students named to the scholarship in 2016, which promotes college-bound students of color demonstrating high academic achievement and high financial need. The scholarship is designed to cover unmet need for college costs for all 1,000 students in each annual cohort funded by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Ho learned of the honor after returning from a trip to China with ACES Educational Center for the Arts.

“Seeing that email in the Washington airport, I was speechless. I felt like the luckiest person in the planet,” he said.

Mayor Toni Harp, who sits as president of the Board of Education, congratulated the two students on the honor. Superintendent of Schools Garth Harries echoed her sentiment, but made a request.
